Kai: Once upon a time, I had not seen a turtle in five years. That all changed this year, when we started seeing turtles (both dead and alive), in our urban neighborhood. We, and several neighbors now have turtles living in our yards – some say they’ve had them for years, but we had not seen one until November of last year, when I was then inspired to do more reptile research.
Kai: Here is the last book for 2021! January would be our chicken-keeping anniversary, but I thought I’d put this kids book out a little sooner. The book is written by me, and illustrated by Arianna and I. Digital effects were created by Avery.
Our chicken keeping experience has been both fun, challenging, and surprising, especially with the appearance of a neighborhood rooster that showed up not long after we got our first two girls, a Brahma, and a Wyandotte. Later in the year, we felt we could afford to expand, and adopted two other ladies, our beautiful easter egger chickens. Throughout all of this, that little neighborhood rooster stole our hearts, and has kept the girls safe from hawks despite his size. In thanks, we’re keeping him warm this winter, and he has been paid in many treats.
While we’re still mastering even the basics of chicken keeping, I think we’ve learned a lot in just one year. We still hope to expand in this area of permaculture, but for now, we shall take care of our small flock. If you are a bird lover, or just want an interesting addition to your backyard garden, I highly recommend this pleasing, and colorful domestic fowl. I feel like they are a great tool to help children learn about animals, nature, and the “backyard” ecosystem. Be sure to get hens from a crazy chicken lady if you want a sweet bird you can pet and hold!
The Party Animals of Abundance Valley is a short and sweet kid’s book I wrote and illustrated with Arianna. This book is a little different than our more cartoon-style books, as I did black water color pictures, which Arianna finished off with an elegant dusting of colored pencil. I think it gives the artwork a little bit more of a sophisticated tone, which helps to match the moral of the story.
What happens when the party animals of Abundance Valley get a little too crazy? Find out in our newest book!
For this month, Arianna and I got to work on a new children’s book, “A Truly Wonderful Christmas”, is a sweet, and warm story-book style tale for kids. It turned out to be a cool little book, so I hope you’ll be happy to read it as well!
I wrote and hand-drew the characters, while Arianna added the color and depth to the illustrations. Avery (as usual), did the great digital touch-ups.
I’m also proud to announce that this is the thirtieth publication on our site! I can’t believe how much we’ve accomplished over the years, and I am so grateful to my siblings for pitching in their own art, writings, work, and time, to make all of these stories come to life, and to make them available to share! I still have many books, novels, and poetry collections in progress, so you can still expect more next year!
Please take a look at our other content as well, you can find more children’s titles, poetry pieces, short stories, and full-length novels in my gallery – HERE.
Kai: As the home school trend continues, I decided this month to release my new children’s book from my educational series; “Your New Friends”. The new book is about pet fish, though it also contains general fish facts for those who do not have pets, too.
