It’s a challenge that you may think at first will be easy, but is way more difficult once put into practice, especially if you’ve never made a comic before. You’ll be forced to learn the fundamentals for just about everything, especially if your working alone. But just because something is difficult, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it at all, in fact, I would argue it’s even more of a reason for you to pursue the venture!

The Challenge of Making Comics

Making a comic is a full-time commitment. Creating just over 50 pages took me almost an entire year. Obviously, the amount of detail you put into your art matters, along with other elements such as whether you include color, whether it’s digitally or traditionally drawn, and the length and number of pages in the book. Any of these factors—and more—can influence how complicated your work becomes and how much effort you need to invest in your project.

Time slips Away Making Art…

Avery: Creating art—whether it’s comics, novels, video games, animation, or any kind of big project—takes more time than many of us realize. Often, we don’t see the true scope of how long these endeavors can take until we’re deep into development. Storytelling, inspiring others, building immersive worlds, this is all good, but it can come with a sacrifice, especially when working on ambitious projects.

Making a Comic & Sharing it is Hard

Avery: Making art, whether it’s comics, videos, or any other form, is a challenge regardless of skill. While working on my comic, I realized the sheer volume of work required—writing scripts, creating thumbnails, and illustrating final pages. Even with the time I have, it feels daunting to know that I may be facing years of effort for just one story. The temptation to cut corners is strong, but I know that sacrificing story and quality isn’t what I want. Instead, I must embrace imperfection and keep moving forward.
